Ectopic Pregnancy - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Nature has its own quirks and one of them is ectopic pregnancy. Life begins with a fertilized egg, called zygote. Serious complications arise when this fertilized egg implants itself outside the womb. This misplaced implant normally happens in the fallopian tubes-the tubes that carry egg from the ovaries to the uterus.

Causes

What causes ectopic pregnancy stays as a mystery. These factors increase the chances

A damaged or scarred fallopian tubes.

Women with a history of pelvic inflammatory disorder.

Women who have a history of endometeriosis, a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus is found outside the uterus.

Women who have a history of surgeries in the abdomen area.

Women who use intra Uterine Devices, Oral Contraceptive Pills, have undergone tubal ligation and still get pregnant have a greater likelihood of ectopic pregnancy.

When a morning after pill goes wrong, it may end as an ectopic pregnancy.

Smoking.

Ectopic Pregnancy tends to repeat itself.

Girl baby, exposed to DES, a drug in the mother's womb could develop genital anomalies.

Termination of pregnancy more than twice.

IVF techniques and induction of ovulation are associated with increased risk of ectopic pregnancies.

Symptoms

ectopic pregnancy is difficult to detect because initially, it mimics symptoms of pregnancy missed periods tender breasts, fatigue and nausea.
Warning signs flash as the embroyo grows, because other than womb no part of female anatomy can expand enough to accommodate a growing embryo.

Abdominal or pelvic pain.

Mild cramping on one side of the pelvic.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Emergency

When an embryo ruptures the fallopian tube, it is an emergency, as it leads to massive internal bleeding and possibly death of the mother. When the tube ruptures, you may feel sharp, pain in your pelvis, abdomen or even in your shoulders and neck. You may become dizzy or faint.

Treatment Options

treating endoscopic pregnancy involves either ending the pregnancy or operating the tube in which this misplaced implant took place. Though ectopics tend to repeat there is greater likelihood of having a normal conception again.
